Palimpsest and Ravel

Details, First Drafts, Works in Progess......

Since 2017 I have been photographing the process of my painting, from the free strokes of pastel through various layers of refining, destroying, finding and becoming the final image.

Palimpsest is an uncovering of the past, to search for the first inspiration or breathe of a work, as well as to restore things to memory. The camera selects details of an image to put it into a different context.

Ravel is the process of tying things to together, while unraveling suggests freeing or unfurling the line and letting it breathe.  In travels to Italy, where artworks are constantly being restored, one encounters the attempts to recover faded memories lost to time.  My work ranges from rawness and the freshness of a the first line to more painterly, as more and more layers of paint change their meanings.

Note: Images titled with an * are early versions of a work.
